That fall I had a
chance to meet with one of the most famous photographers Wolfgang Tillmans and
be a model for his project. Wolfgang came to Saint Petersburg for the Closing Night
of his exhibition in the Hermitage which was held within the well-known
international and travelling festival of Contemporary Art which is called
“Manifesta”. Saint Petersburg was the chosen place to hold the event. The
European Biennial of Contemporary Art was held in the Hermitage from the 28th
of June till the 31st of October 2014.

When I came to know
that I will be photographed by Tillmans, the first thing I did was going to the
Hermitage to learn more about his exhibition. But when I arrived at the Museum
and bought the tickets, me and my friend found out that we had come to the wrong
place. It turned out that the exhibition was held not in the Winter Palace itself
but in the General Staff Building which was opposite the Winter Palace. The
good thing about that was finding an appropriate place for shooting. I had to
practice a little before the work with the master of photography.
At the Saint
Petersburg Manifesta Festival there were two rooms of Wolfgang’s works which
were located in the General Staff Building.
They were placed so
that there was a direct dialogue with the paintings by Henri Matisse in the
next suite.
Tillmans created an
installation for the General Staff Building, the background of which was the
photographs taken during his trips to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Thus the
First Room was his view on Russia.
The Second Room was
his story about corporality, friendship, a kind look at the neighbor and
tenderness that unites and concerns everyone.
A few years ago I
thought that in Germany there were just the best thinkers and musicians but it
turned out that there are the great photographers too…
In the next room
there was Otto Zitko’s work “A Line Against Linearity” that we associated with
the movies by Quentin Tarantino.

When we met I said to Wolfgang:
Once
Yousuf Karsh was asked: “What is the message of photography?” His answer was:
"To me photography is more than a means of expression, more than my
particular profession – it is a way of life. And if I were asked to choose one
word which describes my work completely, I would choose the word ‘light’ – because
light is my language, and it is international, readily understood by any person
of any race." Your pictures impress me not only with the light, but
also with your interest for the world we live in, for its social and
psychological models. The warmth and delicacy of the images bring light into
people’s souls. I really like your abstract pictures, their rhythm and beauty, and
there are always both idea and message in them.

A few days later I came to the
Hermitage again to attend the Closing Night of Manifesta 10. On that night all
the artists taken part in the festival were making their own performances in
their own rooms. Each of them was inventing something special… But Wolfgang
Tillmans outshone everybody playing his music sets right under the roof of the
General Staff Building. There were so many people who wanted to attend the show
so that the security reduced the flow of people.
After the party in the
Hermitage we were given a room where Wolfgang photographed and interviewed me
for his new project about Russia. The first thing Wolfgang said to me was “not
model”. Be as natural as you can. Then we continued the shooting on the Palace
Square. And after that he invited me to a party. Me, Wolfgang, the organization
team and other participants of the Biennial headed to a club where we had a
party on the occasion of the closing of Manifesta 10. In the club I met with
the very nice people. There was good music, tasty food and I really liked
grapefruit cocktails with spices.
Wolfgang Tillmans is the
holiday man. Having performed in the Hermitage, he continued playing his music
at the after-party in the club (though he didn’t sleep for two days). He was so
tired that he fell asleep on the bus while we were getting to the club. We felt
so pity for him that we even didn’t want to wake him up. I immediately felt
that Wolfgang was everybody’s favorite person at Manifesta 10.

I remembered Wolfgang as a
very friendly, considerate and polite man. He is very tactful. He immediately
introduced me to his company. During the party Wolfgang came up to me several
times and asked me what I was drinking and if I had to go to work the next day.

And I was so happy to get the
collection of his works as a souvenir from him in which he left his autograph
for me. Wolfgang has his own galleries in London and Berlin which are called
“Between Bridges”. And from time to time some concerts are performed there. That’s
why besides the book he gave me a music disc which was played in his own Berlin
gallery. Wolfgang himself took photos for the music album cover. You can read
more about the album clicking on the link below:
I am so happy to meet with Wolfgang Tillmans, and I
have the deepest impressions of it. I wanted to show Saint Petersburg to
Wolfgang, but unfortunately, we had very little time because he was flying to
Germany the following day. But I believe that someday I will meet him again!
